Career

In 1819 Polk successfully ran for the position of clerk to the Tennessee Senate in Murfreesboro, the state capital. He served in this capacity while he completed his legal education and was reelected to the same position in 1821.

After passing the Tennessee bar in 1820, Polk worked in Columbia, Tennessee, to build up a private legal practice. He achieved some degree of success, especially after he and state senator Aaron V. Brown formed a partnership in 1822. With his father, Polk was also involved in some land speculation involving previously unsettled tracts in the westernmost quarter of Tennessee.

In 1823 Polk decided to run for the Tennessee House of Representatives, where he served for two years.
