Polk Administration | Introduction

Introduction

Raised in the fertile frontier territory of Middle Tennessee, James K. Polk enjoyed a long and illustrious career in politics that took him from the Tennessee state legislature to the U.S. Congress and, after a brief stint as governor of Tennessee, the U.S. presidency. A protégé of seventh U.S. president Andrew Jackson, Polk spent his entire political life attempting to bring his mentor's Democratic visions into being.
