Despite the disappointments of Pierce's foreign policy efforts, he was more successful in international affairs than in his domestic policies. At a time when the powerful nations in Europe still viewed the United States as an upstart country, Pierce's efforts to expand international trade and acquire new territory allowed the country to continue growing into a powerful presence in international affairs.
Further, perhaps Pierce's failures in domestic affairs were not entirely his fault. Although he received an overwhelming majority of electoral votes in 1852, he was a compromise candidate who was nominated on the Democratic convention's 49th ballot after its failure to agree on a strong leader. This was a built-in limitation to his chances of success.
