Education
As a boy Pierce studied at Hancock Academy and Francestown Academy, both in New Hampshire. At the age of 16 he entered Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. When after two years Pierce learned he was ranked at the bottom of his class, he resolved to study each day between midnight and four A.M., thereby graduating fifth in a class of 13 students.
