Nixon resigned the presidency on August 9, 1974, and returned to San Clemente, California, where he and his wife lived for the next six years. In 1980 they moved to New York City and a little later to New Jersey where they resided until their deaths. After his resignation, Nixon feared prosecution but was pardoned by President Gerald Ford. This was a unique and unprecedented action because there was considerable evidence that Nixon might have been guilty of several crimes.

Although he was utterly disgraced, Nixon began to write and to travel throughout the United States and the world again, working hard to rebuild his reputation as a foreign policy expert and make himself a recognized and influential elder statesman. Many of his books became best-sellers.
