Richard M. Nixon came into office determined to end the Vietnam War (1959–75) and bring the people together at home. He succeeded in an ironic way. He ended the war, although the process took much longer than he imagined, and he united the country not by persuading people to accept his policies but by turning them against him as a result of his scandalous behavior in what came to be known as Watergate. Subsequently, he became the only president in U.S. history to resign.
