The Nixon Administration Legacy
Nixon's domestic achievements were not as impressive as they could have been for two reasons: he could not handle a Congress controlled by the Democrats; and his personality, which drove him to excessive behavior, significantly mitigated his administrative abilities. He had many good ideas, but few of them materialized. Nevertheless, his successes were significant and should not be discounted. The most important of these was desegregation.
The antiwar movement reached a crescendo of violence in 1970 and 1971, due in part to Nixon's inability or unwillingness to explain himself adequately to the American people. However, it is debatable whether by smooth presentation of his policies through the media he could have calmed the public temper which had gotten out of hand.
The Watergate scandal caused a constitutional crisis, tarnishing the presidency, and in fact the entire executive branch...
