Nixon began his formal education in 1918 at age five. He proved to be a precocious student with a photographic mind. He read voraciously. At Whittier High School in Whittier, California, Nixon participated in some sports but devoted himself mostly to debate. He astounded most observers with his debating skills and won numerous contests. He was an honor student and upon his graduation he was given a tuition scholarship to Harvard. He was forced to decline the scholarship, however, because his family could not afford travel and living expenses. Instead, Nixon enrolled at Whittier College.

At Whittier College Nixon was encouraged to read widely and deeply and to think independently, and this had a profound affect on his life. He had been born and reared as a Quaker; taught to accept the literal correctness and infallibility of the Bible. But, as he wrote in his senior essay, his education made this impossible.
