Early Life
Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California, the son of Frank and Hannah Nixon. Frank Nixon, who had grown up in poverty and ran away from home when he was 13, worked as a farmer and then tried the grocery business, but he was never very successful. Frank and Hannah Nixon married over her parents' objections. The Mil-houses were Quakers and Frank Nixon was not. Richard and his five brothers enjoyed a reasonably happy childhood. There was a lot of hard work, however, because of Frank Nixon's business failures, and most of the time the family was barely able to make ends meet.
In spite of his misgivings, Hannah's father loaned the young couple money with which Frank built a house and started a lemon orchard at Yorba Linda. The orchard never did well, largely because of cold weather, and the Nixons never prospered from it. Later Frank Nixon tried a number of other jobs but was not...
