The James Monroe Administrations
A veteran of the American Revolution (1775–83), and the last of the "Virginia Dynasty" who rose to the office after serving as secretary of state, Monroe presided during "The Era of Good Feelings," a period of peace, national expansion, and the absence of party rivalry. Monroe is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, a foreign policy statement which declared that the Americas were to be considered off limits to further colonization by European powers.
