Monroe's formal education began at the age of 11, when he was enrolled at Campbelltown Academy. It was considered to be the best school in the entire colony of Virginia and had a total enrollment of only 25 students. At Campbelltown Monroe became friends with his classmate John Marshall, the future chief justice of the United States. The two remained close until political differences in the 1790s placed them in opposite camps.
Monroe studied at Campbelltown for more than four years, until his father died, and his uncle Joseph, executor of the estate, removed him from the school. Encouraged by his uncle to pursue a career in politics, Monroe entered William and Mary College in June 1774.
