Monroe served as president during an unusual time in U.S. history notable for the absence of party rivalry. Coined by a Boston newspaper, "The Era of Good Feelings," it was a period of time in which Monroe's Republican Party was the only national party after the bitter division sparked by the War of 1812 had subsided. The Federalists had all but disappeared, leaving the Republicans the rewards of victory, but also the perils of factionalism within their own party. In such a setting, the country redirected its energies toward domestic issues.
