Monroe in the Military
Monroe always considered himself a farmer by profession, but in reality he was the country's first career politician. From the time he entered William and Mary in 1774, he had been interested in a career in politics. He first served his country not as a politician, however, but as a soldier. Soon after he and John Mercer had enlisted in the Third Virginia Infantry in 1776, he was made an officer. Such a quick rise in that era was not uncommon for educated men of reputable families.
Within months the Third Virginia joined George Washington's army at Long Island, New York, where the bulk of the fighting against Great Britain was taking place.
