Introduction

Monroe was the last of the Revolutionary War (1775–83) heroes to serve as U.S. president. A Virginia landowner and a member of the political and social elite, Monroe enjoyed great opportunities but also assumed considerable responsibilities. He studied law under Thomas Jefferson as a youth and then embarked upon a life in politics, becoming the country's first career politician.
