Under William McKinley the United States entered the international arena. When McKinley took office, the nation was in the midst of the most debilitating economic depression thus far in its history and was largely isolated from world affairs. By the time McKinley died in his second term as president, the nation had entered into a period of prosperity and growth, and moved into a new era of international involvement.
