Military Service

In 1860 when health and finances forced McKinley to discontinue his studies at Allegheny College, the future president took a job as a clerk for the Poland, Ohio, post office. In 1861, however, when the American Civil War began, McKinley enlisted in the 23d Ohio Volunteer Regiment in western Virginia. The regiment was under the command of future president Maj. Rutherford B. Hayes. In 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, in Maryland, McKinley, a commissary sergeant, drove a mule team through heavy enemy fire to supply troops at the front. He was quickly promoted to second lieutenant and became brigade quartermaster for Hayes. Other promotions followed, and McKinley left the army in July 1865 as a brevet major.
