Madison and the Judiciary

The relationship of the Democratic-Republican Party to the Supreme Court had been strained ever since the John Adams administration (See also, John Adams Administration). The relationship between Madison and the judicial branch of government was shaped in large part by the decisive actions of the Federalist head of the Supreme Court, John Marshall. Coincidentally, Madison's name is attached to the 1803 decision Marbury v. Madison in which Marshall succeeded in expanding judicial authority (See also, John Adams Administration).
