Post-presidential Years

After leaving the White House Johnson retired with his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, to his ranch near Johnson City, Texas, where he devoted himself to three interests: raising cattle, writing his memoirs, and overseeing the construction of the Johnson Library on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Johnson had suffered two previous heart attacks in 1955 and 1972. On January 22, 1973, he suffered a third heart attack and died en route to the hospital. After the funeral service in Washington, D.C., Johnson was buried at the Johnson family plot on the LBJ Ranch near Johnson City, Texas.
