Johnson's Advisers

Johnson's style was to solicit advice from a variety of people both inside and outside his cabinet. While in Congress he also had built up a set of rich and powerful supporters who financed his political career and advised him along the way—and for whom he did favors whenever he could. Among his benefactors were the Brown Brothers of Brown and Root Construction; Alvin Wirtz, an influential Texas utilities lawyer; Ed Clark, a successful Austin attorney who would later receive the post of United States ambassador to Australia; and Charles Marsh, the multimillionaire owner of two Austin newspapers. John Connally, later governor of Texas, also played a major role in Johnson's career, as did Robert "Bobby" Baker, Johnson's former Senate aide and trusted adviser.
