The Lyndon B. Johnson Administrations

Lyndon Johnson inaugurated new initiatives in health, education, human rights, and conservation with his Great Society program that served the needs of the U.S. middle class. With the War on Poverty he also attacked the problems of urban blight, unemployment, and job training among the poor. His effectiveness in passing social reform legislation is matched by few other U.S. presidents. But, his foreign policy—and especially the Vietnam War (1959–1975)—undermined the constructive aspects of his domestic agenda.
