Early Life
Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in Gillespie County, Texas, on August 27, 1908, the first of five children of Sam and Rebekah Johnson. His younger siblings were sisters, Rebekah, Josefa, and Luci, and brother Sam Houston. Later in his life Johnson was fond of recalling that his family was unhappy and poverty-stricken. This was one of his numerous exaggerations. In fact, his family was middle class, and his parents doted on their oldest boy. If anything, Johnson was spoiled. His mother was particularly attentive and tried diligently to fulfill his every whim. She introduced him to the "finer things" of life. His father was somewhat more distant but did instill Johnson with a passion for politics. Sam was active in Texas politics most of his life and served six terms in the state legislature.
