On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was shot while at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln lost consciousness after being shot and was carried to a house across the street. He died early on April 15, 1865. Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase administered the presidential oath of office to Vice President Andrew Johnson of Tennessee at approximately 10:30 A.M. that morning.
Secretary of War Edwin Stanton took charge of the investigation of Lincoln's death. Lincoln's assassin, a sympathizer with the Confederate cause named John Wilkes Booth, initially escaped, but he died during an attempt to capture him at Port Royal, Virginia, on April 26. Eventually, eight people were tried by a military tribunal for the conspiracy to kill President Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William Seward. Four were executed, the others sentenced to life imprisonment.
