The Lincoln Administration Legacy
One of the great ironies of the American Civil War (1860–65) is that the United States emerged stronger than when it entered the war. The war effort boosted the industrial economy of the North, and the problems with the U.S. economy that the war exposed were successfully resolved by legislative reforms of the banking and currency system. The domestic agenda of the Republicans, which included such landmark legislation as the Homestead Act and the Morrill Land-Grant College Act, also boosted the economy and helped speed the development of the western United States during and after the war.
Still, as the war drew to a close, the Lincoln administration faced many problems. The most significant: what to do with former slaves and former rebels.
