Early Life

From his birth on February 12, 1809, until his inauguration as president on March 4, 1861, the early life of few presidents has been as exhaustively studied as Abraham Lincoln's. Since the traits and influences on the boy mold the man, scholars have searched extensively for information on the young Lincoln. Yet much of his early life remains mystery and speculation, since little evidence has survived. It is known that Lincoln was born in a log cabin situated along Nolin Creek just south of the city of Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and was named Abraham after his paternal grandfather.
