Lasting Impact

Intensely private and unknowably complicated, Kennedy left a perplexing legacy built mostly on what might have been. Given more time Kennedy may have secured many of the same programs passed during Lyndon Johnson's presidency, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and an antitpoverty program, dubbed by Johnson the War on Poverty.

Vietnam

Long after the end of the Vietnam War (1959–75) historians pondered what effect Kennedy might have had on the war's outcome had he lived. Shortly after Kennedy's death the Johnson administration instituted a plan written by Kennedy advisers to expand covert action against North Vietnam (See also, Lyndon Johnson Administration).
