For the first few years after John F. Kennedy's death, his administration and its accomplishments were widely celebrated. The Kennedy White House was even referred to as "Camelot" (the mythical court of King Arthur). No politician thereafter captured the public's imagination to the same degree as Kennedy. Forgotten, at least momentarily, were the mistakes and shortcomings. When economic prosperity blossomed forth in 1965, many credited Kennedy's prudent policies and foresight. When Americans landed on the moon in 1969, many saw it as a Kennedy victory. When the United States later turned seriously in the 1970s to the business of arms reduction and peaceful coexistence with the Soviet Union, many remembered Kennedy's first tentative steps in that direction.
