In 1797 in London, England, Adams married Louisa Catherine Johnson, daughter of the U.S. consul to London. The couple had three sons who grew to maturity, George Washington, John, and Charles Francis, and one daughter, Louisa Catherine, who died as an infant. Adams's sons would struggle under the high expectations inherited from their father and grandfather's service as presidents of the United States.

As first lady Louisa Catherine Adams was a social hostess when not bedridden by poor health. She was frustrated by her husband's refusal to advance his presidency by being more social and rewarding friends and supporters with political appointments. As congressional opposition made the presidency the low point of Adams's political career, his consequent depression made it the low point in his marriage.
