Early Life

John Quincy Adams, the eldest son and second child of John and Abigail Adams, was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, on July 11, 1767. As the son of the second president of the United States, Adams was raised in the governing class of the new nation. His background was an apprenticeship to high office. He accompanied his father on diplomatic missions to Europe, and he was steeped in the culture of New England's Puritan society that held piety, independence of spirit and mind, ambition, and learning in high regard. In this environment Adams developed a hard-nosed tendency to favor morality over popularity.
