Adams and the Judiciary

Adams's administration was a quiet time for the federal judiciary. The Supreme Court announced no significant decisions. A bill to enlarge the membership of the Supreme Court to allow Adams to appoint two new justices failed to pass Congress. Although Adams occasionally ran into Chief Justice John Marshall during their daily, early morning walks around the capital, Adams's distaste for socialization kept him from having much contact with members of the federal judiciary. During his presidency Adams appointed one associate justice, Robert Trimble of Kentucky, to the Supreme Court.
