The Adams Administration Legacy

Adams left the White House after delivering peace to the United States. To be sure, the Thomas Jefferson administration had to handle unfinished business. Changes in the settlement with France had to be resolved—the countries eventually agreed to abrogate the old treaties of 1778 and to forgive France's obligations for property seized during the quasi-war. As for Great Britain, the Jay's Treaty commissions had disbanded during Adams's presidency without resolving post-Revolutionary War issues. Adams, however, had charted a course for peace that proved to be invaluable as the United States sought territorial expansion, namely purchase of the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon Bonaparte, under the Jefferson administration.
