Career

When Jefferson left William and Mary in April 1762 to study law under George Wythe in Williamsburg, Virginia, Jefferson was not really interested in being a lawyer. He even scoffed at the legal profession's wordy and unethical methods, but he wished to extend his years of scholarship. Thus Jefferson studied for five years under Wythe and was not admitted to the bar until 1767, after which he developed a successful and lucrative law practice. Jefferson's practice gave him frequent contact with the leading men of the Virginia bar, including Patrick Henry, an advocate of revolution against Great Britain. All the while Jefferson continued to supervise his tobacco plantation.
