Introduction

The first of the United States's "log cabin" presidents, Andrew Jackson rose from humble backcountry origins to become a U.S. congressman and senator, a renowned military hero, and the seventh president of the United States. Among many Americans, especially those of the western frontier, he was acclaimed as a symbol of the new American: self-made, strong through closeness to nature, and endowed with a powerful moral courage.
