In 1891 Hoover was part of the 559 member charter class of Leland Stanford Junior University, an institution endowed by the prominent California senator and railroad magnate. The university was located 30 miles south of San Francisco, where the village of Palo Alto was soon founded. Graduating in 1895, Hoover made his mark in college politics, being particularly active behind the scenes by holding such offices as student body treasurer. He was a capable student, not a brilliant one, shining far more in his major, geology, than in German or English.
Only after graduation did Hoover's bookish side appear. In a sense reacting to a college training that concentrated on the sciences, he would read widely for the rest of his life.
