Hayes returned to Ohio to begin his law practice. He became interested in a young woman, Lucy Webb, who attended the Wesleyan Female College and was an ardent Methodist, abolitionist, and prohibitionist. Hayes was skeptical of religion and social reform throughout his life, but despite of these differences they married on December 30, 1852. Devoted to each other, their marriage proved to be fulfilling, fruitful, and long-lasting. The couple had eight children, five of whom, four sons and a daughter, lived to maturity.
