Hayes Administration - Introduction
Introduction
A well-liked and capable lawyer, Rutherford B. Hayes came to the public eye through his military service during the American Civil War (1861–65) which propelled him first to Congress and then to the Ohio governor's office. The sincerity of his desire to heal the wounds of the Civil War and Reconstruction were never questioned, even if historians have criticized his policies as president.
