Vice President Calvin Coolidge succeeded to the office of president upon the death of President Harding. Florence Harding lived for only 16 months after the death of her husband. She had suffered from a variety of illnesses and died on November 21, 1924.

It was not long after Harding's death that Congress and the courts uncovered widespread corruption in his administration. Although no evidence ever showed that the president was personally involved in any wrongdoing, several of his advisers were convicted and served time in jail.
