Warren G. Harding was born the year the American Civil War (1861–65) ended, and he grew to maturity in the years when the Republican Party dominated U.S. politics. The party's strength was based in the rural North, where Harding was born and raised. It also had the support of business, of which Harding was also a part as owner and operator of a small newspaper in Ohio that grew into a successful publishing venture. Harding was a prototype of many successful Republican politicians in the decades following the end of the Civil War.
