In 1891 Warren Harding married Florence "Flossie" Mable Kling De Wolfe, a divorced woman who was four years older than him. (A few years into the marriage, Harding assigned the nickname "Duchess" to his wife—referring to her dominant personality.)
Soon after their marriage, Florence Harding began work at her husband's newspaper, the Star. She saw to matters of circulation and made sure that the newsboys who distributed the paper collected from their customers. Her contribution was important in making what had been a small struggling paper a financially successful one.
Their childless marriage was not a happy one. Florence Harding " . . . was shrewish and sharp . . . . Her personality soon began to jar upon the easy habits of her husband. Gradually there was a drifting apart, though it was not often apparent to outsiders" (Trani and Wilson, p. 33).
