Early Life

Warren G. Harding was born on November 2, 1865, on a farm near Corsica (later, Blooming Grove, Ohio). He was the first of six children of George and Phoebe Harding. The Hardings were proud of their ancestral heritage, and George Harding claimed that his family could be traced back to an early Puritan immigrant from England who had settled in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1623. Over the next two centuries the family gradually migrated west, and one branch of the Hardings arrived in Ohio about 1820.

Warren Harding's parents were married shortly after his father returned from military service during the American Civil War (1861–65). In 1873 when Harding was seven years old his family moved to nearby Caledonia in Marion County, Ohio. Here Harding's father established a full-time medical practice.
