The Harding family had moved to Marion, Ohio, in 1882. Marion boasted three railroads passing through the town and several small manufacturers. George Harding's medical practice flourished.
During his first years in Marion, Warren Harding studied law in the office of a family friend. However, he did not care for the study of law and left the profession when he realized that he was not turning a profit and had to ask his father for financial aid to pay his bills.
Harding tried his hand at teaching school and sold insurance for a short time. Finally, he obtained employment as a reporter at the Marion Mirror. The newspaper, like the town of Marion, strongly supported the Democratic Party. Even as a young man, however, Harding was a Republican. In 1884 this led to his dismissal from his reporter's job at the Mirror when the editors of the paper learned that he was spending time working for the election...
