The Grant Administration Legacy
Grant succeeded in addressing many of the pressing concerns of his day; when Rutherford B. Hayes succeeded Grant in 1876, he inherited few long-standing problems. Reconstruction was effectively over, with only a few states still under the control of Reconstruction governments. While some controversy still surrounded the greenbacks, particularly in light of the depression that the nation had been in since 1873, Grant's fiscal policies had maintained the fundamental soundness of the U.S. currency and economy. In addition, Grant had settled the Alabama claims, the only pressing matter in foreign affairs to arise during his administration. Political corruption also was a part of Grant's legacy, however.
