The Grant family could afford better than average education for their children. Ulysses Grant's schooling began in Georgetown, Ohio, in a school run for profit by John D. White, where Grant learned the fundamentals. He attended the Maysville Academy in Maysville, Kentucky, from 1836 to 1837, and the following year attended the Presbyterian Academy in Ripley, Ohio. While Grant was a good student, particularly in mathematics, he was certainly not an outstanding one. His father's ambitions led him to ask Representative Thomas L. Hamer for an appointment to the United States Military Academy for his son, and in 1839 Grant left for West Point, New York.

By this time Grant had already been tinkering with his name. His given name, Hiram Ulysses Grant, resulted in the initials "HUG," which he understandably disliked. As a result, Grant began inverting his middle and first names so the initials became "UHG," and he began to...
