Early Life

Hiram Ulysses Grant was born on April 27, 1822, to Hannah Simpson Grant and Jesse Grant, a tanner. When Grant was just an infant his father moved the family to Georgetown, Ohio, in order to be closer to the raw materials needed for his tanning business. It was in and around Georgetown that Hiram Grant grew up. As a child Grant showed no interest in his father's tanning business. While his father saw horses as a source for his leather products, Grant was drawn to them as sources of wonder. Throughout his life Grant knew how to handle and appraise horses.

Due to his father's success in the business world, Grant's childhood was not a stressful one. He helped with the chores around the house such as hauling wood and, as Grant said in his famous Memoirs "all the work done with horses."
