Garfield and the Judiciary

Stanley Matthews of Ohio became a Supreme Court associate justice during Garfield's administration, although he was not originally nominated by Garfield. Rutherford B. Hayes had appointed Matthews shortly after Garfield had been elected, but the Senate refused to confirm him as a snub to Hayes. When Garfield took office, he reappointed Matthews as a courtesy to Hayes and requested the Senate to respond quickly. Ultimately, the full Senate confirmed Matthews by only one vote. Later in his career, Matthews spoke for the Court in Yick Wo v. Hopkins (1886), ruling that discriminatory administration of just laws violates the Fourteenth Amendment's clause on equal protection under the law.
