Education
Garfield was an early achiever who learned to read at home by age three. He attended the district school near Orange Township, Ohio, and then Geauga Academy at Chester, Ohio. In 1851 Garfield enrolled at the Eclectic Institute in Hiram, Ohio, and transferred to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, as a junior. He was active in the college's debate, literary, and theological societies and graduated in 1856.
