After passing the bar in 1907 Roosevelt became a clerk in the Wall Street law firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn. He was a competent attorney and could have made a fine career in the law, but his ambition lay in politics. He made this clear on many occasions, often remarking that he wanted to be president. He clearly intended to model his political career on that of his distant cousin, former president Theodore Roosevelt. He would seek election to the state legislature, then become governor, and finally move on to the White House. His plan was destined to work remarkably well.

Roosevelt's chance came in 1910 when he was elected to the New York State Senate.
