Ford and the Judiciary

President Ford's relationship with the judiciary was uneventful during his short term. When William O. Douglas left the Supreme Court in 1975, Ford had the opportunity to fill the liberal Douglas's seat with a more conservative jurist. His choice was the U.S. Court of Appeals judge John Paul Stevens. Stevens was confirmed with little debate and was seated on the Supreme Court in 1975, where he maintained a centrist, or moderate, position.
