Ford was gifted in athletics and scholastics and his skills earned him a scholarship to the University of Michigan, which he attended from 1931 to 1935. He majored in economics and political science. Ford was named a college all-star football player and graduated with a B.A. in 1935. Ford turned down offers to play professional football to take a coaching job at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and attend law school there. He graduated with a law degree in 1941.
