Family Life

While Fillmore was attending the Academy of Good Hope in New Hope, New York, he met Abigail Powers, who was a 21-year-old teacher at the academy. Powers significantly influenced Fillmore with her interest in books that sparked a similar interest in him. The two fell in love and after a long courtship were married on February 5, 1826. In time Fillmore and his wife built a large personal library.

Abigail Fillmore advanced her husband's career by continuing to teach to provide family income while Fillmore studied to become a lawyer and establish a legal practice. When she became first lady, Abigail Fillmore discovered the White House had no library. Her husband, with congressional approval, obtained funds to create a library of some nine hundred volumes. Even though she was a devoted wife who provided intellectual companionship and financial support when needed, Abigail Fillmore was always quite frail.
