Changes in the U.S. Government
The Compromise of 1850 (See also, Domestic Issues) brought a number of changes to the United States. Most significantly, California was admitted to the union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The Compromise also led to the enactment of a Fugitive Slave Law that for the first time made the federal government responsible for the recovery of runaway slaves. On March 2, 1853, the Washington Territory was created out of the northern part of what was then Oregon.
